Reiywathi

Reiywathi is now 5 years old. She was born in Malaysia with a midline Tessier Cleft. This is a very rare craniofacial deformity which is evidenced by a large gap through the centre of her face from her forehead to her palateimage

Her mother was distressed about her condition but was not offered much help.

The operation in Malaysia would be much too expensive for them to afford. After some time they contacted a relative who is a doctor. He suggested that the Australian Craniofacial Unit may be able to help her.

Mr David went to Malaysia and saw Reiywathi in 2007 and scheduled her treatment in Adelaide soon thereafter.

She will also likely require further surgical interventions until she is fully grown.

Many people assume that only one surgery is required for these patients when, in fact, it often takes the management team from birth to maturity with multiple treatments and planning along the way. The treatment at the Australian Craniofacial Unit can be life changing. This treatment provides the opportunity for children such as Reiywathi to better integrate into society imageand lead happy and rewarding lives.

Children from Year 1 at St Peter's College gave Reiywathi a party to celebrate her birthday and her successful first surgical procedure.
